Naomi Campbell gives evidence at the Hague war crimes trial of former Liberian leader Charles Taylor, telling the court she was given a pouch containing small ‘dirty-looking pebbles,’ which were in fact uncut diamonds, in 1997 during a visit to South Africa.
Ms Campbell was placed in the awkward, and potentially dangerous, situation of having to give evidence against a war criminal when it was revealed by actress Mia Farrow that the supermodel had once received diamonds given to her by the former Liberian ruler accused of being responsible for the callous murder of thousands of people. With friends like Mia Farrow, who needs enemies?

Supermodel Naomi Campbell reluctantly testifies at a war crimes trial.
Dressed in an understated cream outfit with bee-hived hair, Ms Campbell looked the business for yet another day in court for her. The publicity will not have done her profile any harm at all and will have effectively brought the campaign against ‘blood diamonds’ to the attention of a much wider audience.
Now, if the powers that be could just get some proper evidence to lock up that murdering despot for life, all’s well that ends well. We’ll see!
