“Unlike my contemporaries who have moved to Europe and America, I am happy to be based in Africa despite the obvious material hardships.”
Born in Sudan in 1966, Abushariaa gained a B.A. in Fine Arts from Sudan University. Influenced by Nubian culture, his Moslem faith, Ibrahim Salahi and the challenges of today, he has learned from the past, but lives in the present and faces the future with confidence as can be seen in his inspiring works of art.

Abushariaa has lived in Kenya since 1994, where he has been artist in residence at Paa Ya Paa Arts Centre. The impact of his work on art in Nairobi is clearly noticeable. News of his success brought hope to many Sudanese artists in Khartoum. Thanks to his friendly spirit, more and more new artists from Sudan have moved to Nairobi to live and work.
East Africa has many challenging Western, traditional and modern styles of life, but with his faith in Africa, Abushariaa sees it as a potentially dynamic and creative place for contemporary art rooted in African idioms and expressions.
