I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Alena

http://grantsforeducation.info

Is the solution for these communities to assume complete responsibility for educating their own in a similar way to the Jewish community?

Yes it is. But be warned, any initiative in that direction will be labeled as racist. Any program, idea, or organization that seeks to address the needs of black people specifically has been targeted for destruction in 21st century America.

Let's also keep in mind some of the other issues facing inner city (black) children's ability to learn: poor nutrition, lack of parental support (its difficult for an illiterate parent to help their child succeed academically), the need to help support their families, lack of safe, quiet places to study, etc.

I have this conversation all of the time with people - never have we been able to sum it up so completely. But I think there is another factor at play too, this culture of failure. We fete the parolee upon his return from prison and mock the college graduate. Smart kids suffer and it has gotten so much worse that kids are afraid to do well.
